I enjoy working through the Zentangle Inc project packs even if I don’t do them when the videos first go live. The truth is, sometimes other artwork or life activities may be a higher priority at that time.
Every pack has new and different techniques that the Zentangle community may not have experienced or thought about using. Rick and Maria, Molly and Martha, and Julie all participate in bringing their own insight to each technique and favorite tangles to the project. As an example, you can count on Maria using Mooka and Rick enjoying Paradox (although not this time, haha).
This project pack is largely about transitions. Transition from one tangle to another, one technique to another, and transition from black to gray to white. It is also about transitioning our mindset to calm, relaxed and inquisitive.
Project Pack 13 Materials
Project Pack 13 was published back in March 2021. The prepackaged materials include several white and gray regular Zentangle tiles and Phi tiles. The pen pack includes regular basic materials (black Micron, pencil, tortillon), clear Glaze gell pen and General’s Sketch and Wash.
Day One: Rick and Maria with Quabog
I thought this technique of underpainting was interesting. It automatically adds a nice texture and I realize that I should use the technique more often.
Day Two: Rick with Fragment D1
This is such an interesting use of a fragment in a grid. Despite the intense gray achieved by the Sketch and Wash graphite the star pattern stands out. Shift (transition) your eye and you can only see the shaded hole star. The hole was achieved by carful use of the Glaze pen and graphite.
Day Three: Molly and Martha with Tipple and Seeds
Another interesting technique tile creating a fun sunflower like shape - I LOVE sunflowers! Of course I was incredibly tempted to add Poke Leaf or Toodles on the stem. My focus through the project pack is to learn from the founders and grow my skills. I can explore my own thoughts on the techniques using the extra tiles provided in the pack.
Day Four: Cadent with Molly and Martha
I like Cadent although I don’t use it often. This tile and technique was enjoyable as it turned a grid tangle into something more interesting with layers and glaze shine.
Day Five: Julie and Aquafluer
I really enjoyed this tile with jumbo size bands. It is nice to do that sometimes and it provides extra space for tangling in a tangle. Julie used this to her advantage by using the glaze pen in the bands with the graphite wash, and then Shattuck in the other parts. Shading and highlights add more dimension.
Day Six: Maria’s Favorite Mooka
The texture provided by Sketch and Wash lines is an amazing foundation for Maria’s Mooka. She loves to layer and overlap them in most of her compositions. The hat-like Springle eventually morphs to Bunzo in the composition. My Bunzo didn’t get to the size that Maria used but still works.
Day Seven: Ing with Rick
This technique really highlights the benefits of using the clear glaze pen. A wide Ing band stands out nicely against the shading and Crescent Moon.
Day Eight: Molly and Martha with Drippy Graphite
I know, a funny title for this lesson, but it’s true. We played with very wet Sketch and Wash graphite to make six tiles with different designs. We selected the one tile suited to drawing Arukas and Diva Dance emphasizing the natural design of the graphite.
Day Eight Continued
I couldn’t help myself, I needed to play with the spiral tile we created to make my own transitions. I started with a Flux shape moving to Tripoli seemed like a good idea. After that it was Well o Well and Well transitioning to fragments L2 and S7.
Conclusion
I definitely enjoyed this project pack. I was tempted to add color to some of the tiles, but that is not what this pack was about. Transitioning is something we can all improve in life and art.
